For PRESS’ design, Architect Howard Backen (Il Fornaio, Kokkari, Cyrus, Scala’s) used the finest materials and finishes to create a space that combines a luxurious feel with an easy, approachable style to make diners feel at home in the restaurant—and the restaurant seem at home in the wine country of Napa Valley. Backen drew upon the rich agricultural tradition of the region for inspiration in designing the building—a modern farmhouse-style corrugated frame that blends with the surrounding vineyards.
Natural light and fresh country air fill the restaurant via custom-built greenhouse paneling, framing the rolling vine-covered hillside beyond. Large leather chairs cushion the guests, who can watch the sommeliers climb library ladders to retrieve their wine, or simply gaze upon the oversized fireplace and new rotisserie at the head of the room. The walnut bar, the hand-scraped floor, the stone patio and outdoor fireplace - these fine materials, this attention to detail, are all PRESS’ approach to create “an atmosphere that is warm and inviting, yet understated enough to let the food take center stage.”
